About Jeff Gettis

Jeff Gettis Welcome to my website. I am an artist from Torrington, Connecticut.

The subject matter found in my paintings, pastels, and prints stem from the natural world. A starting point for me can be choosing one or more of the many photographs I take during hikes on surrounding trails. I call these photographs "Idea Sparkers".

I'm interested in the colors and endless textures that nature provides and how I can manipulate them into a cohesive composition and mood that work together to create an emotional response.

Sometimes I infuse my work with elements of fantasy and semi abstraction because that's where a particular work may lead me. Trusting my intuition is an important part of my creative process.

My photographic based work represents scenes from my imagination, incorporating dream imagery with traditional influences, and contemporary digital photography techniques. Being a painter for many years has influenced my approach to photography greatly. I create each photograph with a painters eye, spending many hours on each image until my vision is achieved. The approach to my materials can best be described as hybrid, or mixed media with the end result being photography.

When I create an image my aim is to produce something thought provoking, surprising, and atmospheric in nature. Drawing the viewer in through composition and use of common objects used in unusual and unexpected ways. I equate my work to jazz improvisation. Being a sometimes musician and playing with bands in the past has taught me the importance experimenting along the way until a cohesive chord is struck, trusting my instincts as I go through my creative process. An image needs to feel right as well as look right to me.

I welcome different interpretations of my of my images. Sometimes I intend to have layers of meaning but those meanings can be multiplied even more according to what each viewer brings to the work. At times I infuse my work with a slight bit of humor. I enjoy mixing mystery with humor for further effect, always exploring the line between dreams, fantasy, and reality. Subtlety is another important element when creating each piece. One characteristic you will always find in my work is the careful placement of objects to further intensify the ephemeral, and add an increased feeling of intrigue.

My influences are wide ranging. Surrealism, Symbolism, and Metaphysical art, are apparent, but I also have a great appreciation for the landscape paintings of Thomas Cole, George Inness, Whistler and William Turner. Picasso and Van Gogh are all time favorites, as well as many expressionist artists. So called low brow artists can also hold my interest.
